The Brackendale Art Gallery: A West Coast Legacy
Born in 1970 from the vision of the late Thor Froslev—a Danish longshoreman and local folk hero—the Brackendale Art Gallery (familiarly known as "The BAG") was built board-by-board using salvaged timbers and a deep love for the arts. For over five decades, it served as the "bohemian heart" of Squamish, acting as a sanctuary for artists, a stage for world-class musicians, and the headquarters for the Brackendale Winter Eagle Festival.
In 2023, a new chapter began when local entrepreneurs Adrian Blachut and Jessica Rigg (the team behind the beloved Zephyr Cafe) took the reins. Their mission has been a delicate balance of preservation and evolution—upgrading the infrastructure and food program while meticulously protecting the quirky, hand-crafted details that make the building a living piece of history.
Standing guard near the entrance is the gallery’s most whimsical landmark: The Brackendale Unicorn. This life-sized statue was commissioned by Thor Froslev decades ago and has become a beloved symbol of the venue’s "anything is possible" spirit.
Whether you are admiring the Wall of Faces (a collection of 118 concrete life-masks of community members), snapping a photo with the Unicorn, or listening to live music under the cedar beams, you are reminded that The BAG is more than just a gallery; it is a cultural clubhouse built on the belief that art and nature are the glue of a community. It remains the spiritual home of the "World Eagle Capital," where West Coast grit meets creative grace.
